Stillness Keeps You Grounded
Stillness is what keeps people alert and calm. To simply put, people are in the present moment. Generally, the human mind can live in two natures such as memory or imagination. It can feel great but it can also cause harm to one’s self. Thoughts can generate beautiful memories of a person’s past experiences and with imagination, they can produce some form of a desired outcome in life. However, the opposite can also happen such as terrible experiences and the thought of horrible outcomes. When thinking of these dreadful concepts it can hurt the person mentally, physically, and it can limit the subject’s potential.
It is known that on average the mind creates 60,000 thoughts a day. It is quite excessive, but most of these thoughts are repeated thoughts. Those who think of terrible scenarios are the director of their own drama. Whether someone thinks of something good or bad it will multiply to many thoughts. The best course of action is to have no thoughts or at least minimize the number of thoughts. Stillness plays an important role in everyday life since it keeps the person alert and involved in any situation.
What can Stillness do?
Stillness offers a wide range of perks and best of all it is possible for everyone to do. Everyone is capable of becoming still, so regardless of the individual’s background their intentions only matter. Here is a list of reasons why being still has a significant impact.
- You will have more energy (too much thinking leads to fatigue).
- Cool, calm, collective, and observative.
- Formulating solutions to situations will become easier.
- Reduced stress.
- Best ideas come when the person is joyful and calm.
Stillness is the key to living?
As mentioned before, stillness keeps the person alert and aware of their surroundings. Events occur in the present and chances are people miss the opportunity since they are distracted by their thoughts. The research shows people who are still are least likely to react to occurring situations. Rather, accepting what challenge is in front of them. It also shows these individuals have improved self-awareness. Constructing the person’s inner environment is most crucial. It is important to do so since processing and handling uncertainty will be easier.
Stillness can also increase well-being and intelligence. Living with life becomes effortless because the person is accepting everything as it is. When building a strong environment within, navigating through life can lead to more action. An example is when people work in stressful environments. Teachers experience much stress due to their surroundings and demand. Studies show when teachers practice mindfulness meditation they are able to manage their stress. They become calmer and more in control of themselves. Subjects stated after practicing one week of mindfulness meditation made a significant difference.
How to Obtain Stillness?
In order to achieve stillness, one must maintain their practices daily. Stillness needs to be regulated and to do this there are methods needed to be done. So, when having the intention of wanting to be still the practitioner needs their own routine. Here is a list of activities to try.
- Meditation: It is a simple method. Close your eyes breathe in and out, focus on your breath and it shall keep you calm. If done in the dark it has a better effect.
- Nature: If you take off your footwear and stand on soil you are interacting with nature. You start to feel certain energy within yourself. As you are connecting yourself to Earth.
- Journaling: Writing out what comes to mind is a way to clear out the clutter in the mind itself. It is similar to cleaning and organizing the house. It is most effective with pen and paper.
- Sit in a quiet area: Sit still in a quiet area and do your best not to think. Literally do nothing and think of nothing for 5 to 10 mins. Remember to breathe.
- Isometrics: Try balance exercises it pushes you to maintain your focus on balancing exercises. If you think, it can get you off-balanced.
- Hobbies: Hobbies keep you busy. You would not think of anything other than doing the activity. Hobbies keep you immersed so all your doing is doing.
- Acceptance : When being open you accept surroundings as they are. No judgments or thoughts are being made. You are going about your day.

Conclusion
It is always best to experiment with what processes works for the person specifically. As Bruce Lee said “Research your own experience. Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially your own.” It appears to be simple which it can be if the individual is willing to make it simple. Stillness is an incredible feeling because everything becomes clear and easy to navigate.
